6 Ways To Awaken Your Creativity

“Whatever you dream you can do, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it. Begin it now.” Goethe

Many people link the idea of creativity with being an “artist,” meaning someone who has a natural talent for expressing what they see through writing, art, dance, music or song. Art is defined in Webster’s New World Dictionary as human creativity. This need to create is an expression of our soul that reaches back to the very beginning of time. The ancient yogis called it pakritti, the universal energy that makes up all forms of matter. Creative energy is the cycle of birth, growth, and dissolution, a never-ending cycle to which we are all intimately connected. In other words, art is a metaphor for life, and life is a metaphor for living. Expressing yourself creatively is a recognition, integration, and understanding of what it is to be human.

This creative energy is a spontaneous manifestation that can be seen in the way we dress, the way we decorate our surroundings, the jewelry we wear, the art we hang on our walls, the way we do our job and interact with people around us. It is interesting to note that our individual creative contribution to this process is often determined by how we see and think of ourselves. Our thoughts can open us to inspired moments of greatness or reduce us to inaction filled with doubt. Your creative energy is always within and ready to be used; how you harness it for your greater good is the challenge.

1. Identify your mental blocks. Make a list of all the ways you hold yourself back from expressing yourself creatively.

2. Change your perception of how you think things can be done. Notice the mental blinders you wear that limit your ability to dance with possibility. Instead focus on the positive aspects of your creative power with positive thoughts and eliminating negative excuses.

3. Believe in your ability to manifest your creativity. You are the only one who can determine what you can and cannot do. Rather than hold yourself back let your creative nature flow.

4. Give yourself permission to be more creative. Sometimes we need to give ourselves permission to do the most simple of things. In this case, “I give myself permission to be a free and creative soul.”

5. Get out to creative places. Take time to explore and be inspired by the beauty of nature, an afternoon at the museum, art galleries, the theatre, dance concert, your favorite music or even a bookstore. Let the creativity of others open you to new vistas of your own.

6. Surround yourself with creative people. There’s nothing like being around creative people to get your creative juices flowing. Consider taking an art course that will encourage you to create and also put you in contact with like-minded individuals who are tapping into the universal ocean of ideas and imagination.
